RIDE the DRAGON
The sun feels warm on my back. My neck and shoulder muscles make cracking noises as I stretch high and flex them. A gentle breeze flows through the tall trees, making little whispering sounds. The air smells fresh of damp earth and coursing water, crushed pine. Sounds of life surround me. I’m reminded of a poem I learned in school many years ago, by Edna St Vincent Millay. Oh world, I cannot hold thee close enough! Thy winds, thy wide gray skies! Thy mists, that roll and rise! Thy woods, this autumn day, that ache and sag And all but cry with color…
I don’t want to return to the Retreat. I’ve spent lifetimes living in a cave and even with all its amenities; it is still a hole in a rock, a cave. Sitting in my cozy spot atop a boulder I can’t help but think of my mother. Whenever she spied me sitting on cement steps or outdoor benches she’d reprimand me and tell me I’d get “piles” when I got older. Funny, she never warned me about getting shot, stabbed, or blown up, much less losing my entire family and friends when the world was destroyed. She was right about cold rocks though.
John is tired; he looks worn. There’s plenty to do here. We are still building and supplying this cavern retreat but he has done this before, on not quite as large a scale, but I know he relies on me to take care of most of the details. He worries about his family, especially the children that he sent away to learn survival skills, relying on others to train them well and keep them safe. He is a patient man but even the great John Rourke can’t repair Emma’s memory and bring her back to him. He needs a soul mate.
Michael bears the burden of uniting a diverse group of earth’s survivors in order to defeat our growing list of enemies. Some enemies have been working to destroy us for hundreds, even thousands of years. Other enemies are just getting started. Natalia, as always, stands beside him working tirelessly as does Annie. We rely on the Posse to have Michael’s back but their numbers are dwindling. We have military personnel defending us as well as long-time inhabitants of this area. We have stockpiles of supplies and weaponry at our disposal. We have vehicles and planes ready to travel.
Did we do the right thing by taking the fight underground? Have we done enough? The fight continues on many fronts but we have no choice except to move forward. I shudder to think what could happen if our enemies joined forces and came at us as one! Hopefully, what John Thomas Rourke has taught us still stands? It pays to plan ahead!
I should go back inside the Retreat, my hole in the rock, but this spot at this particular time is what I need most. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to grab sleeping bags and stay here all night with my beautiful Annie? It’s been a long time since we slept under the stars. We could build a campfire and make coffee the next morning, just the two of us.
A wonderful dream but that’s all it is, isn’t it? This is war.
Come on, Paul, back in the cave. I guess a glass of Seagram’s will have to do.

You may want to get some advice on how to better defend yourself and your family from bad guys or, wake up some morning wanting to make yourself a sword just like Conan’s. Do you have a fire extinguisher? Do you know how to use it? A panic situation is not the optimum time to start reading directions on the canister. Would you be able to keep yourself in shape without that gym membership or expensive equipment? Have you ever gone out for a hike in the woods and gotten terribly lost? Did you ever think of trading skills instead of money?
Survival is a constant learning experience and sometimes you learn right away and sometimes you don’t. It just seems to make more sense to have certain knowledge and skills available before you get into a situation where they are necessary.
